‘Lady Midnight’ Release & recensie

 

Het is eindelijk zover! Vandaag verschijnt het eerste boek van Cassandra Clare’s nieuwe Shadowhunter serie The Dark Artifices: Lady Midnight!

The Dark Artifices is het vervolg op The Mortal Instruments, en speelt zich af in Los Angeles, vijf jaar na het einde van City of Heavenly Fire (NL: Stad van Hemelse Vlammen). Lady Midnight vertelt het verhaal van Emma Carstairs en haar parabatai Julian Blackthorn, die samen met diens familie in het Instituut van Los Angeles wonen.

De personages

De The Dark Artifices serie heeft een aantal nieuwe personages (al zien we personages uit The Mortal Instruments ook een enkele keer voorbij komen). Sommigen kennen we al uit City of Heavenly Fire, maar sommigen zijn ook compleet nieuw. Daarom even een kleine opfrisser.

 

Emma Carstairs

Emma is een Shadowhunter van het Instituut van Los Angeles en de parabatai van Julian Blackthorn. Haar ouders, John en Cordelia Carstairs, werden dood aangetroffen gedurende City of Heavenly Fire en er werd aangenomen dat Sebastian Morgenstern verantwoordelijk was voor hun dood. Emma is er echter van overtuigd dat iemand anders verantwoordelijk is voor hun dood en zet alles op alles om de dader te vinden. Emma staat bekend als de snelste en meest getalenteerde Shadowhunter sinds Jace Herondale.

 

Julian Blackthorn

Julian is één van de zeven Blackthorn kinderen en is na de dood van hun ouders verantwoordelijk voor zijn vier jongere broers en zussen: de tweeling Livia en Tiberius, Drusilla en Octavian. Hij heeft nog twee oudere familie leden: zijn half-zus Helen en zijn half-broer Mark, die beiden half Faerie zijn. Julian en Emma werden in 2009 parabatai en wonen sinds het einde van de oorlog samen met Julian’s familie weer in het Instituut van Los Angeles, waar Julian’s vader Andrew, voor diens dood, het hoofd van het Instituut was.

 

Mark Blackthorn

Mark ontmoetten we voor het eerst in City of Heavenly Fire, waar hij ontvoerd wordt door Sebastian Morgenstern. Uiteindelijk wordt Mark gedwongen een jager in de Wild Hunt (NL: de Wilde Jacht) die wordt geleid door Gwyn ap Nudd. Mark is half Faerie en half Shadowhunter, net als zijn volle zus Helen, en heeft kenmerkende puntige oren. Doordat hij een jager in de Wild Hunt is, hebben zijn ogen twee verschillende kleuren: een oog is groen-blauw (net als bij de andere Blackthorn kinderen) en het andere is goudkleurig.

Mark’s oudere zus Helen is verbannen naar Wrangel Island, waar zij woont met haar partner Aline Penhallow.

 

Cristina Rosales

Cristina komt oorspronkelijk uit Mexico en verblijft momenteel als uitwisseling een jaar in Los Angeles. In de korte tijd sinds ze in het Instituut van Los Angeles woont, is ze beste vriendinnen met Emma geworden en probeert ze Emma zo goed mogelijk te helpen bij diens zoektocht naar de moordenaar van haar ouders. Met haar eigen ouders heeft Cristina een gecompliceerde band, vooral met haar moeder, die niets liever wil dan dat zij trouwt met een verre verwant: Diego ‘Perfect Diego’ Rosales, een Centurion van de Scholomance, een groep elite Shadowhunters.

 

Arthur Blackthorn

Arthur is de oom van Julian en diens broers en zussen, en het officiële hoofd van het Instituut van Los Angeles. Hij is nogal eccentriek en brengt al zijn tijd door op de zolder van het Instituut, waar hij klassieke teksten leest. Hoewel Arthur officieel het hoofd van het Instituut is, is Julian eigenlijk degene die zijn taken waarneemt…

 

Diana Wrayburn

Diana konden we al ontmoeten in City of Heavenly Fire waar zij Clary haar zwaard Heosphoros gaf. Sinds het eind van de oorlog woont Diana in Los Angeles, en is zij de lerares van de Blackthorn kinderen. Diana heeft veel gereisd, waaronder ook in Thailand, en draagt enkele geheimen met zich mee.

 

Malcolm Fade

Net als de meeste bovenstaande personages, konden we ook Malcolm Fade al ontmoeten in City of Heavenly Fire, waar hij warlock Catarina Loss en weerwolf Maia Roberts bijstond. Na de oorlog werd Malcolm de High Warlock (Hoge Heksenmeester) van Los Angeles en vult hij onder andere zijn tijd met het verkopen van zijn magische diensten aan Hollywood producers. Malcolm is bevriend met de Blackthorn familie en komt vaak op het Instituut.

 

Johnny Rook

Johnny Rook is een mysterieuze figuur, die we nog niet eerder hebben ontmoet. Als je de illustraties van Cassandra Jean een beetje hebt gevolgd, dan heb je al een tweetal illustraties van hem kunnen zien voorbij komen (1 | 2), maar verder is er heel weinig over hem bekend. Waarschijnlijk is hij een Mundane of een Downworlder.

 

Het verhaal

Lady Midnight begint met de komst een delegatie van Faerie naar het Instituut van Los Angeles, iets wat ten strengste verboden is na het verraad van de Koningin van Seelie gedurende de oorlog, waarna elk contact met de Faerie verboden werd. De Faerie zitten echter met een groot probleem: Iemand is bezig met het vermoorden van leden van hun volk, en ze komen bij de Shadowhunters om hulp vragen. De mysterieuze moorden (niet alleen van Faerie, maar ook van normale mensen, Mundanes) vertonen ook nog eens grote overeenkomsten met de moord op de ouders van Emma Carstairs: de lichamen zijn bedekt met demonische teksten en ontbinden binnen enkele uren. In ruil voor de hulp van de Shadowhunters bieden de Faerie een heel bijzondere prijs: de terugkeer van Mark Blackthorn, de oudere halfbroer van Julian.

Emma en haar parabatai Julian openen de jacht op de moordenaar, maar dat wordt hen niet makkelijk gemaakt. De demonische teksten zijn hun enige aanwijzing en deze blijken moeilijk te vertalen. De gepleegde moorden lijken geen verband met elkaar te hebben en het is een race tegen de klok om de moordenaar te vinden voor hij weer toe slaat. En dat alles moeten zij doen zonder de aandacht te trekken van de Clave (NL: de Kloof), die immers alle contact met de Faerie verboden heeft.

 

Wat vinden wij van het boek?

Wij kregen heel lief een tijdje terug al een recensie exemplaar van de Britse uitgever Simon & Schuster en wij kunnen jullie alvast zeggen dat het verhaal echt superspannend is. Lady Midnight (en volgende boeken uit de serie ongetwijfeld ook) is een waardig vervolg van de Shadowhunter kronieken. Het heeft een frisse nieuwe groep met personages, die we toch al een beetje kennen, met nieuwe vriendschappen, liefdes en geheimen. En voor degenen die nog steeds heimwee hebben naar The Mortal Instruments en The Infernal Devices: Ja, er komen ook personages uit beide series voorbij! Wie dat zijn vertellen we lekker nog even niet, dat moeten jullie zelf maar lekker gaan lezen. Maar, die feels! ;)

Wat wij erg leuk vonden is dat Lady Midnight een ander soort verhaal is dan de boeken van The Mortal Instruments. Een groot deel van het verhaal gaat over de speurtocht naar de moordenaar, en het heeft toch wel wat weg van een detective (fun fact: Julian’s jongere broer Tiberius zou heel graag detective à la Sherlock Holmes zijn). Je zit continu op het randje van je stoel om te weten te komen wie verantwoordelijk is voor de moorden. Wie de bad guy of bad girl is kom je dus echt niet zomaar te weten. En wie is eigenlijk Lady Midnight? Allemaal raadsels die gedurende het boek door je hoofd heen gaan.

En dan de liefde. Welke ships zullen er in deze serie ontstaan? De meest voor de hand liggende is die van Emma en Julian. Cassandra heeft hier al een paar keer naar gehint, maar of het echt wat wordt tussen hen is nog de vraag… Relaties tussen parabatai zijn namelijk verboden door de Clave (wat is er nou eigenlijk niet verboden? The Law is annoying), en dit staat ook centraal in het boek. En dan hebben we Mark Blackthorn nog, die door méér dan een personage erg aantrekkelijk wordt gevonden. Onder andere door Kieran, een Faerie prins en een jager uit de Wild Hunt, die toch niet weg kan blijven van Mark. En Cristina Rosales heeft ook de nodige liefdes bagage die haar achtervolgt vanuit Mexico naar Los Angeles.

De vriendschap tussen Emma en Cristina is ook erg leuk om te lezen, en hun nauwe band is eigenlijk toch wel iets nieuws. De vriendschappen tussen bijvoorbeeld Clary en Isabelle, of Tessa en Sophie, waren heel anders. En daarom is het zo leuk om eens een vriendschap tussen twee Shadowhunter meiden te lezen die op gelijke voet staan. Ze hebben het geregeld over jongens en relaties en dat is dus allesbehalve ‘gewoon’.

Een van de leukste en interessantste personages vinden wij Tiberius, of Ty, zoals zijn familie hem noemt. Naast het feit dat Ty graag in de voetsporen zou treden van Sherlock Holmes, is hij namelijk autistisch. En dat vinden wij ook het mooie aan Cassandra’s boeken: Of het nu om ras, (homo-/bi-)seksualiteit of iets anders gaat, in Cassandra’s boeken speelt diversiteit een grote rol. En dat is iets wat natuurlijk steeds belangrijker wordt in young adult boeken.

Kortom, Lady Midnight is een geweldig boek met een aantal intrigerende nieuwe personages. Het verhaal houdt je in z’n greep tot de allerlaatste bladzijde en heeft een superspannend einde. En nadat je Lady Midnight uit hebt wil je niets anders dan meteen in het volgende boek beginnen. Daarom geven wij vijf (★★★★★) welverdiende sterren aan Lady Midnight!

Over de Nederlandse vertaling is helaas nog niets bekend. Uitgeverij Moon heeft gezegd dat ze het boek en de toekomstige delen van de serie wel van plan zijn uit te geven, maar er is nog niet bekend wanneer dit gaat gebeuren.

The time has finally come for a brand new Shadowhunter book! Today is the release of the first book of Cassandra Clare’s new Shadowhunter series The Dark Artifices: Lady Midnight!

The Dark Artifices is the sequel of The Mortal Instruments, and takes place in Los Angeles, five years after the end of City of Heavenly Fire (Dutch: Stad van Hemelse Vlammen). Lady Midnight tells the story of Emma Carstairs and her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, who, together with his family, live in the Institute of Los Angeles.

The characters

The new The Dark Artifices series has a couple of new characters, although we will also see some familiar faces from The Mortal Instruments pass us by. Some we already know from City of Heavenly Fire, but others are completely new. So it’s time to freshen up a little.

 

Emma Carstairs

Emma is a Shadowhunter from the Los Angeles Institute and the parabatai of Julian Blackthorn.Her parents, John en Cordelia Carstairs, were found dead during City of Heavenly Fire and it was assumed that Sebastian Morgenstern was responsible for their murders. However, Emma convinced that someone else is responsible for their deaths and goes all out to find their murderer. Emma is known as the best and most talented Shadowhunter since Jace Herondale.

 

Julian Blackthorn

Julian is one of the seven Blackthorn siblings and since the death of their parents he has been responsible for raising his four younger brothers and sisters: the twins Livia and Tiberius, and the younger two Drusilla and Octavian. He has two older siblings: his half sister Helen and his half brother Mark, both of whom are half Fearie. Julian and Emma had their parabatai ceremony in 2009 and returned to live in the Institute of Los Angeles, where Julian’s father Andrew had been head of the Institute, after the end of the war.

 

Mark Blackthorn

We first met Mark in City of Heavenly Fire, where he was kidnapped by Sebastian Morgenstern. He is ultimately forced to become a hunter in the Wild Hunt (Dutch: de Wilde Jacht) which is led by Gwyn ap Nudd. Mark is half Faerie and half Shadowhunter, just like his full sister Helen, and has characteristic pointed ears. Because he is a hunter in the Wild Hunt, his eyes have two different colours: one eye is greenish-blue (just like his other Blackthorn siblings) and the other is gold.

Mark’s older sister Helen has been banished to Wrangel Island, where she lives with her partner Aline Penhallow.

 

Cristina Rosales

Cristinais originally from Mexico and is currently staying in Los Angeles as part of a yearly exchange. In the short time she has lived in the Institute, she has become best friends with Emma and tries to help Emma as best as possible with the search for the murderer of Emma’s parents. With her own parents Cristina has a complicated relationship, particularly with her mother, who would like nothing better than for her daughter to marry a distant relative of hers:  Diego ‘Perfect Diego’ Rosales, a Centurion of the Scholomance, an elite group of Shadowhunters.

 

Arthur Blackthorn

Arthur is the uncle of Julian and his siblings, and the official head of the Los Angeles Institute. He is rather eccentric and spends most of his time in the attic of the Institute, where he reads classical texts. Although Arthur is the official head of the Institute, it is Julian who performs most of his tasks…

 

Diana Wrayburn

We already met Diana in City of Heavenly Fire where she was the one to give Clary her sword Heosphoros. Since the end of the war Diana has come to live in Los Angeles and has become the tutor of the Blackthorn children. Diana has travelled extensively, for example in Thailand, and has some secrets of her own.

 

Malcolm Fade

Just like most of the characters mentioned above, we have already met Malcolm Fade in City of Heavenly Fire, where he and fellow warlock Catarina Loss assisted werewolf Maia Roberts. After the war Malcolm became High Warlock of Los Angeles and fills his time with selling his magical services to Hollywood producers (amongst other things). Malcolm is close friends with the Blackthorn family and is often found at the Institute.

 

The story

Lady Midnight begins with the arrival of a delegation of Faerie at the Institute of Los Angeles, something which is strictly forbidden after the treason of the Seelie Queen during the war: All contact with the Fair Folk is forbidden. The Fair Folk have a serious problem though: Someone is murdering members of their kind. They have come to the Shadowhunters to ask for help. The myserious murders (which not only include members of the Fair Folk, but also normal people, Mundanes) also show great similarities to the murder of Emma Carstairs’ parents: the bodies are covered with demonic writing and start to decay within a few hours. In exchange for the help of the Shadowhunters, the delegation of Faerie offer a very unusual prize: the return of Mark Blackthorn, the older half brother of Julian.

Emma and her parabatai Julian start the difficult task of hunting down the murderer. The odds are against them: The demonic texts are their only clue and turn out to be difficult to translate. The committed murders seem to have no connection to each other and it is a race against the clock to find the murderer before he or she strikes again. And worst of all, they have to accomplish this without attracting the attention of the Clave, who, after all, have forbidden all contact with the Fair Folk.

 

What do we think of the book?

We very kindly received an advance reader’s copy of Lady Midnight a while ago from the British publisher of Cassie’s books ( Simon & Schuster) and we can already confide that this new Shadowhunter adventure is super exciting. Lady Midnight (and we predict the next books from the new series will be as well) is a worthy continuation of the Shadowhunter Chronicles. It has a fresh new cast of characters, that we already know a little bit, and new friendships, love stories and secrets. And for those that still miss The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices: Yes, we will see some characters from both series in the first book! We won’t spoil for you which characters will come to hang out in Lady Midnight (Read the book!). But, oh those feels! ;)

What we especially liked is that Lady Midnight is a different type of story than for instance the books of The Mortal Instruments. A large part of the story is taken up by the search for the murderer, and this gives the story a bit of a detective feel (fun fact: Julian’s younger brother brother Tiberius would like nothing more than to become a detective à la Sherlock Holmes). You’re continuously at the tip of your chair to find out who’s responsible for the murders. Finding out the identity of the bad guy or bad girl is no piece of cake. And who is the eponymous Lady Midnight? They’re all  riddles waiting to be solved while you’re reading the book.

And then there’s the love story. Or make that love stories. Which ships will come into being in The Dark Artifices? The most obvious ship is that of Emma and Julian. Cassandra has already alluded to it a couple of times, but if it really works out between them remains to be seen… Romantic relationships between two parabatai are strictly forbidden by the Clave (Is there something that hasn’t been forbidden by them? The Law is annoying), and this is an important theme in the book. And then there’s Mark Blackthorn, for whom more than one character has more than friendly feelings. Such as Kieran, a Faerie prince and hunter in the Wild Hunt, that can’t seem to stay away from Mark. And Cristina Rosales also seems to have a bag of love-related secrets following her from Mexico to Los Angeles.

The Friendship between Emma and Cristina is also very nice to read and the close friendship between two female Shadowhunters is very refreshing. The friendships between, for example, Clary and Isabelle, or Tessa and Sophie, were very different. And it makes for a very interesting read to see a relationship between two Shadowhunter girls who are pretty much equal to each other in terms of experience and who have both been Shadowhunters all their lives. It’s also nice to read about them talking about ‘mundane’ things such as boys and relationships. Poor Cameron (who?) and Diego. ;)

One of the nicest and most interesting characters (in our humble opinion) is Tiberius, or Ty, as his family calls him. Besides the fact that Ty would love to become a detective like Sherlock Holmes, he is also autistic. That is the beautiful thing about Cassandra’s books:  Whether it’s about race, (homo-/bi-) sexuality or something else entirely, diversity plays an important role. And it’s something that’s becoming more and more important in a new generation of young adult books.

In short, Lady Midnight is a fantastic book with a number of intriguing new characters. The story keeps you in its clutches until the very last page (and far beyond) and has a super exciting and surprising ending. And after you’ve finished Lady Midnight you’ll want nothing more than to start in the next book! Therefore we give five (★★★★★) well deserved stars to Lady Midnight!
